How the reading plan calculator works
Yearly goal mode takes the books you still want to read and spreads them evenly over the days you have. Books per month uses an average month (365.25 ÷ 12 days), and pages per day is your remaining books times the average page count, divided by the number of days (counting both the start and end date).
Finish-a-book mode divides the pages you have left by the days until your deadline. Minutes per day uses your reading speed and an estimate of words per page, so you can see whether the target fits a lunch break or needs an evening on the couch. You also get a day-by-day page plan.
Choosing a goal you'll actually enjoy
- Start from last year. If you read 20 books, 24 to 30 is a stretch that still feels doable.
- Think in pages, not books. Twenty pages a day is roughly 20 books a year of 350 pages each.
- Leave room for chunky books. A 700-page fantasy counts the same as a novella, so balance your list.
Tips for hitting a deadline
- Front-load a little. A few extra pages on the first days gives you a buffer for a busy night later.
- Pair it with a habit. Reading with your morning coffee or right before bed makes the target automatic.
- Switch formats. If you're behind, an audiobook edition can carry you through a commute.

Questions people ask
How many pages a day do I need to read 52 books a year?
At an average of 350 pages per book, 52 books is 18,200 pages, or about 50 pages a day over a full year. With 300-page books it's closer to 43 pages a day.
How many pages can I read in an hour?
At about 250 words per minute and roughly 300 words per page, most people read around 50 pages an hour of a typical novel. Dense nonfiction is slower; light fiction is often faster.
How many books does the average person read a year?
It varies a lot. Surveys often find that many adults read only a handful of books a year while dedicated readers read dozens. The best goal is one that fits your life, not someone else's.
Does the deadline mode count today?
Yes, if you tick "I can still read today". Untick it if you've finished reading for the day, and your plan starts tomorrow.
Do audiobooks count toward a reading goal?
It's your goal, so you decide. Many readers count audiobooks, and they are a great way to fit books into commutes, walks and chores.
What happened to the reading goal and pages per day calculators?
They're both here now. Pick "Hit a yearly goal" for the old reading goal calculator, or "Finish a book by a date" for the pages per day calculator. Old links still work.
