How book trope bingo works
Choose one or more genres and the generator deals 24 random squares from our trope lists (30 per genre, 180 in total), with a free space in the middle. Tap a square whenever a book you read has that trope. Get five in a row, in a column or corner to corner for a bingo, or stamp all 25 for a blackout.
Ways to play
- Monthly bingo. Deal a card on the 1st and see how many squares you can stamp by the end of the month.
- Book club race. Send the card link to your book club. Everyone gets the same card; the first to a bingo picks the next book.
- One-book challenge. Stamp every trope in a single book. A romantasy can easily fill a whole row.
- Print it. Print the card and keep it as a bookmark, or stick it in your reading journal.
What is a book trope?
A trope is a familiar story pattern readers love to spot: enemies to lovers, a found family, a locked-room mystery, a cat with opinions. Tropes aren't clichés when they're done well. They're a promise about the kind of feelings a book will deliver. Not sure which tropes are yours? Take our what should I read next quiz, or browse romantasy for beginners and cozy fantasy to start with.
Questions people ask
Can I print my bingo card?
Yes. Press Print and only the card prints, sized to fill the page. Clear the stamps first if you want a blank card to fill in by hand.
Can my friends play the same card?
Yes. Your card (genres, layout and stamps) is saved in the page link. Copy the link and send it: your friend sees the same squares and can stamp their own.
How many tropes are there?
180: 30 each for romance, fantasy and romantasy, cozy reads, mystery and thriller, classics and reading-life moments. Every card is a random mix of the genres you pick.
Does one book count for more than one square?
In your game, you decide. Most readers let one book stamp as many squares as it fits. For a harder game, allow one square per book.
Is it free?
Completely free, with no sign-up. The card is saved on your device and in the link.
